Whitney Houston and Dana Bash

Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born to a musically inclined family on 9 August 1963 in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. as well as a cousin of the singing sensation Dionne Warwick. In Newark Whitney started singing in the church choir in the early years of her childhood. At the age 15 she accompanied her mother the background vocals for Chaka's hit Im Every Woman from 1978. Then, she performed backing vocals to Jermaine Jackson and Lou Rawls and her mother. Beginning in 1981, she started singing with the New York-based funk group Material. It was her excellent vocals of this group that attracted interest of recording labels including Arista. Whitney Houston became the top-selling debut record for an artist in 1985. On the album, she came out with several hits such as Saving all My Love for You How Do You Know You Give Good Love And The More Love of All. This led to her achieving seven US Top Ones consecutively. It was even better than the Beatles. The album itself sold 3 million copies in its initial season in the US and then went on to sell 25 million worldwide winning it the very first one of six Grammies. The follow-up album released in 1987 Whitney which included the hits The Place Do Broken Hearts Go and I Wanna Dance With Somebody built on her success but it was 1992's film The Bodyguard (1992) that made her one of the top-selling performers of all time. While the movie itself and the performances in it weren't widely appreciated, the album's soundtrack and her version to the Dolly Parton song I Will Always Love You made the charts of albums and singles for months and sold 44 million copies all over the globe. The daughter of her mother Bobbi is born the month of March of 1993, a year following her wedding to Bobby Brown. It was about this time when her well-documented drug use began and by 1996 she was a daily drug user.
